On his new album, Tha Carter III, Lil Wayne discusses the racial injustices that exists in the US prison system in his song “DontGetIt”. The album is the first in 3 years to sell over a million copies its first week.
“I was watching TV the other day rightGot this white guy up there talking about black guysTalking about how young black guys are targetedTargeted by whom? AmericaYou see one in every 100 Americans are locked upOne in every 9 black Americans are locked upAnd see what the white guy was trying to stress was thatThe money we spend on sending a mothaf**ka to jailA young mothaf**ka to jailWould be less to send his or her young ass to college.”
Maybe the politicians and lobbyists should be listening to hip hop after all.

The Dream City Theater Group is based in Washington D.C. It was co-founded by John Muller, a GW graduate. I would consider them to be a theater for social awareness company. Their most recent production, Southside, focuses on youth violence and the recent shootings at Ballou High School.
